  • THE BUTTERFLY SLIDE
The Butterfly slide is used to move around the crease quickly in a butterfly position. It is best used when the puck is in close --within the area of 2 sticklengths of the crease. It allows you to recover while still in position to stop a rebound shot along the ice or to the top corner. It is a critical skill and one that needs to be practiced regularly.

    VIDEO 1
For the beginner. This shows how to do the movements that propell you around. If you have never used the butterfly slide...start here.
A VERY GOOD BREAKDOWN ON HOW TO PUSH FROM SIDE TO SIDE WHEN USING THE BUTTERFLY SLIDE

    VIDEOs 2 - 4
These are the drills you can use to become more proficient in using the technique.
Most of these are skating drills to improve your technique.
Of course pucks can easily be added to some of the skating drills as you become stronger and can use the technique effectively to add some game save situation variations (see notes).

    VIDEO 2
    DUCK WALK
A good first drill when learning the butterfly slide.
Remember, technique is key with this drill.
Keep your lead pad down to seal the ice, keep your stick in position to protect the 5-hole and your hands up to proctect the top of the net.

    VIDEO 3
    TRAPEZOID
An example of a movement drill around the crease in the butterfly slide.
You would next go around the crease in the other direction.
A great warm up drill before the crease gets too chopped up.
Can you move as quickly as the goalie in the video?

    VIDEO 4
    HALF PAD BUTTERFLY SLIDE
A great variation of the butterfly slide. Sometyimes called a "Y" drill.
This is regularly used during a breakaway save and is a great way to stop a deke to either side.
Key techniques to watch are 1. sealing the ice with lead pad 2. protecting the 5-hole with stick and 3. keeping your hands up to guard the top shelf.

    VIDEO 5
    BUJAN BUTTERFLY DRILLS
This is a longer video with several different kinds of drills.
First we see a movement a drill which works on movement and staying in position--not oversliding past the puck when using the butterfly slide.
Next is moving from one side to the other and stopping a close-in shot

    VIDEO 6
    BUTTERFLY SLIDE SHOOTING DRILL 1
Here is a shooting drill with the butterfly slide.
This is a good first save drill practing moving and making the stop and recovering smoothly before moving to stop the next shot. Work both sides.

    VIDEO 7
    PERFROMANCE GOALTENDING PENDULUM DRILL
This is a very good drill to work on conditioning and edges.
Instead of stopping one shot and recoving to stop another on the same side, you go back and forth making a save with each leg until the pucks are exhausted.
A great drill to do once you can do the butterfly slide to help improve your technique.
